Folly of Youth

July 8, 2016 @ 8:00 pm

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Folly of Youth is a program about flying high and landing hard! Les Délices will delve into the myths of Icarus and Phaeton ÔÇô young men who dared to fly too close to the sun ÔÇô with terrible consequences. This special program pairs George Frederic Handel’s own youthful cantata “Tra le fiamme” (1707) performed by soprano Shannon Mercer with French Baroque cantatas and chamber music.

In addition to Handel’s cantata, Folly of Youth will include excerpts from Lully’s opera Phaeton and a little-known sonata by Fran├ºois Duval, “Le Phaeton,” which illustrates Phaeton’s ill-fated story with a melody that repeatedly plummets down to earth. Les Délices completes the program with a lighthearted cantata by Louis Le Maire that extolls youthful exuberance.
